Buying a watch from our specialist auctions could not be easier. Below you will find all the information required to submit a bid and take part in the live action. Should you need any further information, please contact our office and our team will be pleased to help. 

The online catalogue can be browsed in advance of each auction around two weeks prior to each sale, under the Auctions section of this website.

Illustrated catalogues can be purchased and sent by post, please contact the office to order your catalogue. Catalogue Subscriptions

Buyer’s Premium on all lots is 22% (plus VAT) or 26.4% inclusive of VAT.

This charge applies to all bids with free online bidding via our own platform GH LIVE


All sales are on public view at least two days prior to each auction, all the viewing times will be listed in the sale information tab prior to each auction

For security purposes personal identification will be required to view the sales in person 

Condition Reports

If you are unable to view personally we are pleased to offer condition reports. This information is offered as guidance only and buyer’s must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots before placing any type of bid. Condition reports can include further description, answering specifc questions, extra images and video overviews. 


For new clients wishing to register to bid at the auction, photographic identification will be required in the form of either a current driving licence or passport.

1. In the room

Get involved in the auction atmosphere and bid in person at the saleroom. (Currently subject to Covid guidance)

2. Commission bid

Leave a bid with us. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf and will endeavour to purchase the lot as cheaply as possible. If identical bids are submitted, the person who bid first will take precedence. This can be done through the following link. Send Us Your Bids

3. Phone Bid

A member of staff will call in good time before your lot comes up. This service is limited to lots estimated £500 and above and is offered at the auctioneers discretion. Please contact the office to book your line at the earliest opportunity to avoid disappointment.

4. Internet Bidding ‘Live’

GH Live is a free secure online bidding platform provided by Gardiner Houlgate.

It also offers a host of other exciting features including, ‘automated bids’, sale updates, personal watch lists, speedy payment options, bid and invoice history all in one place.

Registration at once your account has been created you will be able to login and register to bid in any of our specialist auctions.

Payment Details & Clearance

All lots must be paid for and cleared within seven days of the sale taking place. Goods will not be released until full payment is received.

We are pleased to accept payment by the following methods: direct bank payment, debit card, credit cards (chip and pin only, see below), cash to a maximum of £8500, Building Society cheque or Bankers Draft.

Cheques will be accepted when supported by a guarantee card up to the limit of the card and at the discretion of the auctioneers, unless arrangements have been made with us prior to the auction.

For International Swift payments please select the ‘OUR’ transaction to ensure the full invoice amount is received.

Card Payments

Due to card fraud, we are no longer able to accept payments by credit or debit cards for ‘customer not present’ transactions over the ‘phone, unless you are known to us. Card payments for ‘live bidding’ will only be accepted if they have been AVS (address matched) and 3D Secure, payments are accepted at the discretion of the auctioneer.

Card payments are still accepted at our premises, but must be supported by ‘chip and pin’, under no circumstances will this method be bypassed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Release of Goods

Payment and clearance should be made within 7 days after the sale. Goods will not be released until full payment has been received and a paid invoice produced. All funds paid direct to bank will be checked for clearance.  For clients arranging courier or third party collection – written instruction must be received from the purchaser; identification will be requested from the courier and vehicle details will be taken, unless known to us. For security purposes our premises are monitored with 24 hour CCTV.


It is the buyers responsibility to obtain the correct import/export licenses and CITES licenses for items which they have purchased. Gardiner Houlgate take no responsibility for the export of goods.

For buyers that do not wish to collect from our saleroom in person, our shipping partners Part and Parcel UK handle collection, packing and delivery of all lots post sale. Part & Parcel have provided us with prices for shipping guitars within the UK & Europe.

Commission Bidding Form with Gardiner Houlgate

You can place an absentee bid, and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf if you are unable to attend the sale. This online commission bidding facility is provided as a convenient way of sending your bids direct to us and there is no extra charge for this service.
